How the world is reacting to Trump's Middle East plan

Image
US President Donald Trump's  Middle East plan  on Tuesday prompted a lukewarm response from Europe and the UN, and a furious rebuke from key Muslim countries who denounced it as a betrayal of the Palestinians. Here are some of the reactions from around to the world to the plan, which had already been resoundingly rejected by Palestinian leaders before Trump launched it alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Palestinian Authority Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas, who has taken part in previous US-led peace talks with Israel but stayed away Trump's proposal, vowed that "this conspiracy deal will not pass". He pledged to "resist the deal in all its forms" after meeting with various Palestinian factions in the West Bank city of Ramallah. "Our people will take it to the dustbin of history." Europe Top EU diplomat Josep Borrell said the bloc will "study and assess" Trump's proposals on the basis of its c...

India school faces sedition charges over citizenship play

Image
Indian police have launched a sedition investigation against a primary school over a play that allegedly criticised a contentious citizenship law, There have been widespread street demonstrations against the law introduced by the Hindu-nationalist government that grants citizenship to religious groups from three neighbouring countries, but excludes Muslims. Police said they were laying initial charges under the British colonial-era law against the principal and the management of the school in Bidar district in the southern state of Karnataka. The probe came after a member of the youth wing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) filed a complaint against the school. "We have started an investigation into the complaint by an activist who alleged that the play criticised and disrespected Modi," Bidar police chief T. Sreedhara told  AFP . He added that the young student actors, aged between nine and 10 years old, were also being...

Americans protest in 30 US Cities against citizenship law

Image
Thousands of slogan-shouting Indian-Americans Sunday staged a demonstration near the Consulate of India in New York to protest against new citizenship regulations that discriminate against Muslims. Organized by the ‘Coalition Against Genocide’ — a grouping of some 40 organizations based in the United States and Canada as well as individuals — the emotion-charged rally was timed to coincide with India’s Republic Day. Similar protests took place in Washington, D.C. and 28 other major American cities in which representatives of American-Sikh, Christian and Jewish organizations as also those of human rights bodies participated. In New York, members of “Black Lives Matter”, a powerful organization of Afro-Americans, also joined the protest. The largest gathering of anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protestors was reported from Chicago where Indian-Americans gathered in large numbers and formed a several mile-long human chain. A number of women were among the protestors carryin...

Palestinians protest agaisnt Trump’s Mideast peace plan

Image
Palestinians protested Wednesday against President Donald Trump’s controversial peace plan that gives Israel a US green light to annex key parts of the occupied West Bank The protests, including isolated clashes, underscored the depth of frustration with a proposal seen as overwhelmingly supportive of Israeli objectives that was drafted with no Palestinian input. Trump, who unveiled the plan on Tuesday at the White House standing alongside Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with no Palestinian representatives on hand, said his initiative could succeed where others had failed. But it grants Israel much of what it has sought in decades of international diplomacy, namely control over Jerusalem as its “undivided” capital, rather than a city to share with the Palestinians. It also offers US approval for Israel to annex the strategically crucial Jordan Valley — which accounts for around 30 percent of the West Bank — as well as other Jewish settlements in the territory. New cases in China surpass SARS epidemic as infections grow abroad; WHO calls for emergency committee meeting

Image
The World Health Organization will reconvene its emergency committee Thursday to determine whether the coronavirus outbreak amounts to a public health emergency of international concern, as the total number of people infected in mainland China surpassed those infected with SARS during the 2002-2003 epidemic. Experts say a vaccine for the virus is still a long way off. Schools in Beijing have closed indefinitely, and foreigners who have been evacuated from Wuhan, which is at the epicenter of the outbreak, are starting to arrive in their home countries or at temporary screening sites, including via charter flights for Japanese and U.S. citizens. Many countries are curtailing flights to China, with American Airlines suspending several routes scheduled for February and March. British Airways and German carrier Lufthansa also suspended flights, as did airlines in India and Kazakhstan. Here’s what we know: ● The death toll has risen to 170 in China, with more than 7,...

Coronavirus Outbreak Tests World’s Dependence on China

Image
As British Airways cancels flights and automakers close factories, businesses consider how to cope without the country’s vast factories and thriving consumer culture. The world is quickly learning how much it depends on China. Ford and Toyota will idle some of their vast Chinese assembly plants for an extra week. Apple is rerouting supply chains. Starbucks has closed thousands of stores and is warning of a financial blow. On Wednesday, British Airways suspended all flights to mainland China, while United Airlines and Air Canada are joining the growing number of carriers reducing service. Japan’s leaders are bracing for a possible hit. Hotels and tour operators across Asia are watching fearfully as the world’s largest source of tourism dollars tightens its borders. The  mysterious, pneumonialike coronavirus  that has killed more than a hundred people and sickened thousands has virtually shut down one of the world’s most important growth engines. Desperate to sl...

Trump's first 100 days on the global stage By Nico

Image
The 45th president entered office raging against a post-WWII order built by the United States, pledging instead that he would put "America First. The US, President Donald Trump said during his campaign, could no longer afford to be the world's policeman. On the stump he also dismissed core alliances in Europe and Asia, raged at trade pacts, derided international organizations such as the UN and trash-talked allies (Mexico) and competitors (China) alike. Trump voters clash over his shifting views But since his inauguration, Trump has steadily reversed course on those fronts and a host of others. The populist president has now embraced NATO, reaffirmed relationships with allies, reinforced international norms against chemical weapons use by bombing Syria and has sent more US troops to help rein in global conflicts. Almost 100 days after Trump entered the White House dismissing the international system, Trump seems to be assuming a US president's traditional...

Is Afghanistan Ready to Negotiate With the Taliban?

Image
After more than a year of negotiations between US and Taliban representatives in Qatar, talks have now reached a critical point. The two sides are reportedly close to signing an agreement that will pave the way for intra-Afghan dialogue and the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan. However, it is not yet clear who will have the mandate negotiate with the Taliban in the intra-Afghan peace talks. The Taliban had for a long time refused to talk with the Afghan government. The National Unity Government (NUG) is divided. President Ashraf Ghani is still waiting for the results of the September election — marred with low turnout and  widespread fraud  — to be announced. The country’s chief executive,  Abdullah Abdullah ,   and   his deputy, Mohammad Mohaqiq, are preparing to bypass Ghani to negotiate with the Taliban.   Who’s Qualified? So who has the qualifications to be an effective actor to agree a peace deal with the Taliban? The answer is, the Af...

Hackers acting in Turkey's interests behind recent cyberattacks, say Western officials

Image
The recent counterattacks by hackers, which targeted European and Middle Eastern governments and organisations, are suspected to be working in the interests on the Turkey, western security officials said. The hackers have attacked at least 30 organisations, including government ministries, embassies and security services as well as companies and other groups, according to a Reuters review of public internet records. Victims include Cypriot and Greek government email services and the Iraqi government’s national security adviser, the records show. The attacks involve intercepting internet traffic to victim websites, potentially enabling hackers to obtain illicit access to the networks of government bodies and other organisations. According to two British officials and one US official, the activity bears the hallmarks of a state-backed cyber espionage operation conducted to advance Turkish interests. The officials said that conclusion was based on three elements: the iden...
